Alexander Wood is a historian of American architecture and urbanism. His research focuses on New York City, with a particular interest in the history of craft, labor, and construction.
He is the author of Building the Metropolis: Architecture, Construction, and Labor in New York City, 1880-1935 (University of Chicago Press, 2025). The book received the 2026 Abbott Lowell Cummings Award from the Vernacular Architecture Forum and the Hornblower Award from the New York City Book Awards. His scholarship has also appeared in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Buildings & Landscapes, New York History, and other journals.
His research has been supported by the New-York Historical Society, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University.
He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, an S.M.Arch.S. from MIT, and a B.Arch. from the Cooper Union.
